The Little Prairie Conservation Area contains the 40 acre remnant Heilbrunn prairie (1) located along the southeast corner of the area. A 3 mile hiking trail that winds through woodlands, restored grasslands, and pollinator plantings and around the 97-acre Towell Lake. More than 240 bird species have been recorded, ranging from waterfowl to woodpeckers, warblers and raptors. The area is especially good for waterfowl from October through April.
Birds you can observe include Bald Eagle, Osprey, Hooded Merganser, Wood Duck, Bufflehead, Lesser Scaup, Northern Shoveler, Horned Grebe, Common Loon, Forster's Tern, Belted Kingfisher, Pileated Woodpecker, and Barred Owl. Summer visitors include Bell's Vireo, Orchard Oriole, Yellow-breasted Chat, Blue-winged Warbler, Kentucky Warbler, Northern Parula, Prairie Warbler, Summer Tanager, Blue Grosbeak and Indigo Bunting.

Little Prairie Conservation Area is located just east of Rolla, in Phelps County. The main entrance is off the north outer road of Interstate 44, about 5 miles east of Rolla. The area has two main parking lots, plus a parking pull-in at Heilbrunn Prairie. Press a P on the map for directions. There are pit toilets at the two main parkings.
