Description

Coombabah Lakelands is a huge area of wetland, gum trees, salt marshes and mangroves on the northern Gold Coast, just south of Brisbane. Several trails and boardwalks make it easy to explore this area, which is not only rich in birdlife but also offers plenty of opportunities to meet other typical Australian wildlife, such as kangaroos, Koalas and flying foxes.

Among the numerous bird species found here are Striated Pardalote, Black-faced Cuckooshrike, Double-barred Finch, Sahul Brush Cuckoo, Latham's Snipe, Scaly-breasted Lorikeet, Red-backed Fairywren, White-throated Needletail, Blue-faced Honeyeater and Channel-billed Cuckoo.

Access

Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area is located on the Gold Coast in Queensland, between the suburbs Coombabah, Helensvale, and Arundel. Getting there is easy. The Coombabah Lakelands are close to Motorway 1, which connects Brisbane with the Gold Coast and goes down to Sydney, over to Melbourne, and beyond.

As the below map shows, there are several parking areas and trails. They are found both north and south of Highway 2, the Golf Coast Highway, which connects Motorway 1 with the coastal cities on the Golf Coast. Press a P on the map for directions to a parking lot. All of these trails are easy to manage. Most of them are even accessible by wheelchair.

There is a bird hide on the trail branching from Shelter Road. It is also marked on the map.
