Description

The Pirang Shrimp Ponds boast 52 man-made ponds created for shrimp farming. It is a vast wetland where you can sometimes observe large flocks of flamingos, spoonbills, pelicans, and waders. The surrounding mangroves and rice fields also host raptors, and smaller passerines, adding to the diversity.

It’s a great place to see a wealth of both resident and migratory waders, herons and water birds. Birds you can observe include Greater Flamingo, Eurasian Spoonbill, African Spoonbill, Pink-backed Pelican, Great White Pelican, Little Stint, Curlew Sandpiper, Avocet, Black-winged Stilt, Marsh Sandpiper, Bar-tailed Godwit, Yellow-billed Stork, Caspian Tern, Little Tern, Crested Lark, Mosque Swallow, Slender-billed Gull and many more.

Access

The Pirang Shrimp Ponds are located inland from the Gambian coast, near the village of Pirang, about 40 km southeast from hotel zone around Kololi Beach. Press P on the map for directions to the entrance where you can park. From there you can explore the area on foot and from the dikes around the ponds you have good views of the birds. But as the birds can sometimes be far away a spotting scope can be pretty useful.

Extra info

We did this route with guide Kawsu Gibba, in a taxi, using the car as a hide, and it went perfectly. This is a great route to combine with a visit to Pirang Forest (also described on Birdingplaces).
