The Escarpment Walk in Judbarra NP is a tough walk in Top End heat, but really worthwhile. This is one of few places you can see White-quilled Rock-Pigeon, and one of the better spots for Purple-crowned Fairywren.

Start as early in the morning as you can. Watch and listen for Purple-crowned Fairywren at the carpark, in the long grasses on both sides of the road. Other finches may also be there: Crimson Finch, Chestnut-breasted Mannikin, Yellow-rumped Mannikin, and Double-barred Finch and Golden-headed Cisticola. Other common Top End birds can be in the eucalyptus forest near the carpark.

The track starts to climb shortly after the carpark, and climbs steadily up a long spur to the top of the escarpment (total rise 180m elevation). Take it slowly, look carefully under rock ledges when it gets hot, or in sunny spots if it's early and cool. It's a harsh site, and there’s not usually a lot of species present, but they are spectacular.

The White-quilled Rock-Pigeon are most likely near the top, where it is very rocky. They are usually not obvious, and need a bit of patience. (Luckily, due to the heat, you'll probably be looking for reasons to stop and rest anyway!) Once found, though, they can be quite calm and allow great photos. Sandstone Shrikethrush could also be around amongst the rocks.

From the plateau at the top, watch out for raptors.

You might also see Short-eared Rock-wallaby amongst the rocks if you’re lucky and observant.
