Beschrijving

Tmatboey is a remote conservation area in northern Cambodia, centred on a small village inside the Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary. It has become one of the country’s most important birding destinations because it protects the last large stretch of dry deciduous forest in Southeast Asia and provides habitat for some of Cambodia’s rarest species. The site was developed as a community‑based ecotourism project in partnership with the Sam Veasna Center and the Wildlife Conservation Society, with the goal of reducing hunting and creating income tied directly to wildlife protection.

The forest around Tmatboey is a mosaic of open woodland, seasonal pools and grassland. This remote area of dry dipterocarp forest supports species that are now extremely scarce elsewhere. Tmatboey is one of the best places in the world to see the Giant Ibis, Cambodia’s national bird and one of the rarest birds on earth. Also the rare White-shouldered Ibis can be found in the area. The Giant Ibis and White-shoulered Ibis are the largest ibis species in the world and classified as critically endangered, with a very small global population. The birds live in dry forest wetlands, seasonal pools, and grasslands, where they feeds on insects, frogs, and small reptiles. Other interesting birds that can be found in the area include White-rumped Falcon, Great-slaty Woodpecker, Black-headed Woodpecker, Rufous-bellied Woodpecker and many more.

Tmatboey is one of the most famous birding destinations in Cambodia, located in the Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary in Preah Vihear Province. It is globally known for two critically endangered species: the Giant Ibis (Cambodia’s national bird) and the White-shouldered Ibis, making it a top target site for international birdwatchers.

Toegang

The village of Tmatboey lies inside the Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary in northern Cambodia, about 4–5 hours from Siem Reap. The best season to See Giant Ibis is December to April, when water sources are limited and birds visit the remaining pools regularly. This makes sightings more reliable for birdwatchers and photographers.
