Beschrijving

The Büsnauer Wiesental (Büsnau meadow valley) is a protected area to the south-west of Stuttgart in direct proximity to the university campus Stuttgart Vaihingen, the Max-Planck-Institute for Solid State Research and the Pfaffenwald forest. The Wiesental consists of meadows, small streams and ponds, hedges and a few reeds and is the only remaining part of a once much larger meadow landscape.

Even though the area is quite small, the Büsnauer Wiesental can be excellent for a variety of passerine birds that are rather uncommon or rare around the city of Stuttgart. Gaai, Staartmees, Goudhaan, Glanskop, Geelgors, Kramsvogel, Spreeuw and Middelste Bonte Specht can be found here throughout the entire year. Kleine Karekiet, Bosrietzanger, Tuinfluiter, Vuurgoudhaan, Grauwe Klauwier and Zwarte Wouw are common to uncommon summer guests. In winter, Grote Lijster, Sijs and Appelvink can readily be observed, while Goudvink and Waterpieper are uncommon.

With some luck, migration can bring in particular highlights, like Paapje, Tapuit or Bonte Vliegenvanger, as well as Graspieper and Boompieper.

Though technically not part of the protected area, the nearby Pfaffenwald forest houses many interesting forest birds that can sometimes even be observed around the edges of the area. These include Zwarte Mees, Kuifmees, Taigaboomkruiper and Zwarte Specht. The roost of a Bosuil is just at the edge of the forest and well known by local birders.
