The Kauerlach Pond is an example of wetland conservation and especially during migration an interesting birdwatching area which can be combined with other near spots in the area like the Rothsee.
The structure of the pond, with its extensive reed beds and shallow water areas, offers ideal conditions for reed dwellers (e.g., Kleine Karekiet, Grote Karekiet) and waders during migration. Species that have been observed here frequently include Kemphaan, Bonte Strandloper, Oeverloper, Witgat, Bosruiter, Zwarte Ruiter, Groenpootruiter and Zwarte Stern.
For other bird species check out the open fields in the North as well as the forest on the East side.

Vogelfreistätte Kauerlacher Weiher is located 12 km southeast of the town of Hilpoltstein and 7 km south of the town of Freystadt. From the A9 motorway, take the Hilpoltstein exit. You can park your car at the southside of the pond. Press P on the map for directions to the parking. Public transport: Nearest train station is in Hilpoltstein (regional connections from Nuremberg). Nearest bus stop is in the village of Häusern, located just south of the pond. From the bus stop it is a 1,5 km walk to the pond. There is a campsite right next to the pond.
