Zalew Szałe is a good place to observe migrating ducks, such as Smient, Pijlstaart and Wintertaling. On the reservoir itself, you can spot many species of gulls, divers, and grebes, such as Parelduiker, Pontische Meeuw and Stormmeeuw, which breeds here. Rarities such as Witkopeend, Rosse Grutto and Grote Burgemeester have appeared on the reservoir.
Szałe isn't just a reservoir, it encompasses everything surrounding it. In the surrounding Winiary forest, you can spot interesting species like Zwarte Specht, Boomleeuwerik and Taigaboomkruiper. Oeverzwaluw and gulls nest readily on the slopes near the reservoir, and in the local fields, you can observe Kievit and Draaihals. Zalew Szałe is located directly southeast of Kalisz. The easiest way to park is at one of the nearby parking lots or use public transport (Pokrzywnicka Tama), where city buses run. Press a P on the map for directions. The route shown on the map is about 10 km.
