Beschrijving

In the lower Casamance, Pointe Saint-Georges is a small tourist site with a few restaurants and opportunities for boat trips on the river. The site is easily accessible from the small town of Mlomp. You can drive along this road at a leisurely pace and stop wherever you like to observe the wildlife, particularly from the Kagnout crossroads onward. The track is not heavily trafficked and winds through wooded savannah, wetlands, and drier areas. Numerous species are present and easy to spot, especially after the rainy season. The beaches along the river also offer excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Toegang

Pointe-Saint-Georges is located in the Casamance region of southern Senegal. It sits along the banks of the Casamance River, close to where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean. The site is easily accessible by car from Mlomp, a small town north of Oussouye. Press P on the map for directions or coordinates.

Another option is by boat from Ziguinchor. There are local pirogues (traditional fishing boats) leaving every Wednesday and Saturday (dates can change) towards the village of Nioumoune, and the pirogue would usually make a stop at the village of Pointe-Saint-Georges (where accomodations are available). The trip downstream takes about 2 hours. These pirogues can be found in the village dock next to Hotel le Perroquet, very close to Ziguinchor port.

Extra info

The condition of the roads and tracks varies greatly, so it will be necessary to drive very slowly in some places. This is fortunate, as there's always something to see, sometimes in unexpected ways.

In Senegal, the best time to visit is the months following the rainy season, starting in November.
