Beschrijving
The Lagunas de Villafranca consist of two lagoons. The Laguna Grande – one of the largest lagoons in La Mancha – that offers a wide range of recreational activities. The Laguna Chica is smaller and more natural and has two bird hides. Of the two lagoons the Laguna Chica is most interesting for birdwatching. The lagoons are often seasonal and can dry up during drier periods.
The lagoons attract a variety of waterbirds, including herons, egrets, and various ducks during wetter periods. Waders may also be spotted when water levels are suitable. These wetlands also serve as important stopover for migratory birds. Beyond waterbirds, the surrounding open plains and scrub around the lagoons are home to steppe birds.
Some of the birds that are often spotted include Steltkluut, Bruine Kiekendief, Grote Karekiet, Krooneend, Dodaars, Purperreiger, Kuifleeuwerik, Hop and Bijeneter. In winter Kraanvogel can show up in the area.
