(*1). (press STARS on map) Upper estuary area, locally called 'Cuckoo Corner'. In Winter IJsvogel Waterral, Kievit and Goudplevier can be expected. Surrounding fields can have Grauwe Gors, whilst both Boerenzwaluw and Huiszwaluw are present often being chased by Boomvalk late in the season.
(*2). Adur Estuary, surrounded on all sides by footpaths, use Adur Recreation Ground Car Park (free). During Autumn/Winter/Spring Scholekster, Tureluur, Bontbekplevier, Steenloper, Bonte Strandloper, the occasional Kluut, Zilverplevier, Groenpootruiter, Rosse Grutto, Grutto, Regenwulp (Spring) and Wulp.
(*3). RSPB Adur Estuary, is a NO access reserve, view from surrounding roads and footpaths. High Spring Tides move birds off this reserve. Check through Gull flocks carefully, Zwartkopmeeuw are often to be found amongst Kokmeeuw here, both Geelpootmeeuw and Pontische Meeuw have been seen.
(*4). Shoreham Fort, use the car park (free) and explore the river mouth and out to sea. Paarse Strandloper are often mixed in with the Steenloper. Their favourite spot is on the wooden pier. Jan-van-gent can be seen, sometimes at long distance though.
(*5). Southwick Ship Canal. Birds often shelter here during stormy weather. View from lock gates at Western End or A259 road on Northern side, BE AWARE the beach near the car park (free) is A DESIGNATED NATURISTS BEACH.
(*6). The Beaches, West of Shoreham Fort is good for birds, unfortunately often disturbed by dog walkers.
(*7). Widewater Lagoon. The car park (fee payable) here is right next to the brackish lagoon. Rotgans, Wintertaling and occasionally Grote Zaagbek can be found in Winter. The margins of the Lagoon can have Scholekster, Bontbekplevier and Tureluur, occasionally Kanoet, Kleine Strandloper and Kleine Plevier turn up here.
