Lower Hartshay and the Cromford Canal support a wide range of birds throughout the year. Sperwer are often seen hunting over the village and surrounding fields, while Buizerd soar overhead and the occasional Rode Wouw drifts through. Blauwe Reiger regularly feed along the reedbeds and canal edges, with Grote Gele Kwikstaart picking insects from the water margins. Staartmees move through the trees in busy family parties, and Cetti's Zanger are frequently heard calling from dense reedbeds.
Autumn and winter bring an increase in wildfowl and passage birds, with Grote Canadese Gans , Grauwe Gans , Wilde Eend , Wintertaling and Smient using the canal and nearby waters. Kievit , Watersnip and Waterral may appear in wetter areas, while Kokmeeuw , Zilvermeeuw and Kleine Mantelmeeuw gather on open water and fields. Thrushes are a highlight at this time of year, with Koperwiek and Kramsvogel arriving from the continent alongside resident Zanglijster and Grote Lijster. Mixed tit flocks, Goudhaan , Putter , Sijs and Barmsijs are regular, and corvids including Kauw , Roek , Ekster and Gaai are ever-present.
Spring and summer see the area come alive with breeding birds and migrants. Gierzwaluw , Boerenzwaluw and Huiszwaluw feed low over the canal and reedbeds, often joined by hunting Boomvalk in warm weather. Reedbeds hold Kleine Karekiet , Rietzanger and Cetti's Zanger , while Braamsluiper and Tjiftjaf sing from scrub and hedgerows. Grote Gele Kwikstaart , Waterhoen , Meerkoet , Pimpelmees and Koolmees regularly breed along the canal, and Veldleeuwerik can be heard over nearby fields. Occasional highlights include Kleine Barmsijs Sprinkhaanzanger , Wulp and Torenvalk.
Overall, this short walk offers excellent habitat diversity and rewarding birding in all seasons, with something new to see throughout the year.

Cromford Canal and Lower Hartshay are located just west of Ripley. There’s no official parking, but on-road parking is possible. Please be mindful of local houses and park considerately. Press P on the map for directions.
