Beschrijving
The River Monnow is a scenic area noted for blossoming fruit orchards in spring. On warm mornings up to 50 Raaf soar the thermals, with Buizerd and maybe a Sperwer. On the river there are Blauwe Reiger, Kleine Zilverreiger, Grote Gele Kwikstaart, Oeverzwaluw, Gierzwaluw, IJsvogel, Waterspreeuw and Mandarijneend. The fruit orchards attract large numbers of wintering Kramsvogel and Koperwiek.

Head west from Monmouth via Rockfield to park at Skenfrith Castle. Cafe here in summer. Pub is expensive. Or take Osbaston road to Tregate bridge where there is limited parking. 6 mile circular walk available along both river banks, passing Llanrothal chapel (open) and Ruthlin mill.
