Beschrijving
The reservoir is shallow, having only a maximum depth of 9m (30’), which makes it very attractive to both dabbling and diving ducks. It occasionally attracts less common wildfowl, such as Grote Zaagbek and Zwarte Zee-eend and Roodhalsfuut, Geoorde Fuut and Kuifduiker. Waders are often present in spring and autumn, including Kemphaan, Witgat, Watersnip, Tureluur, Scholekster and Kleine Plevier. Scaling Dam can also be an excellent place to watch raptors and, from the hide, an eye should always be kept on the moorland plateau and valleys for Blauwe Kiekendief, Bruine Kiekendief, Smelleken and Slechtvalk and, if you are extremely lucky, Rode Wouw or Ruigpootbuizerd. The site is also good for summer visitors, such as Koekoek, Paapje and Fitis, and residents like Roodborsttapuit, Grote Gele Kwikstaart and Ringmus.
There is a hide for birdwatching where you might see Kievit, Grauwe Gans, Grote Canadese Gans, Wilde Zwaan and many wading birds.
