Talybont Reservoir has two bird hides, car parking, and a nice cafe in the village. Shallow water, marshland and exposed mud at the top end attract dabbling ducks, waders especially Houtsnip, Watersnip, Bokje, Blauwe Reiger, Kleine Zilverreiger and Waterral in autumn and winter. The woods have Bonte Vliegenvanger, Buizerd, Bosuil, Boomklever, Taigaboomkruiper and Nachtzwaluw. In the surrounding streams look for Grote Gele Kwikstaart, Waterspreeuw and Roodborsttapuit. And on the moors may be Wulp, Goudplevier, Schots sneeuwhoen, Raaf, Graspieper and Tapuit . The nearby canal has IJsvogel.

Between Brecon and Abergavenny. Take the B4558 and turn south in Talybont village. A regular bus service runs through the village, from which it's a 2 mile walk to the reservoir. The circular route up to Tor y Foel is 5 km, with 250 metres of ascent. Stout boots, a hiking pole, snacks, a drink and waterproof clothing are recommended.
