Beschrijving

The Honey Island Swamp in Pearl River Wildlife Management Area is a flat wet area with a range of mixed hardwoods to cypress-tupelo swamp. The trail is a paved road that terminates at the Pearl River and passes over several small streams. Breeding highlights include White-eyed Vireo, Red-eyed Vireo, Kentucky Warbler, Hooded Warbler, American Redstart, Northern Parula, Prothonotary Warbler, and Swainson's Warbler. Winter birding is also rewarding including Red-shouldered Hawk.

This is one of the most accessible sites for this range of habitats in the area.

Extra info

Note that there is no designated parking by the bridges so be careful to not block the road. In addition do not go to the shooting range area to bird. Be aware that as you travel the road closer to Pearl River the mosquito pressure can be overwhelming. Fortunately there is abundaant good birding before that part is reached.

The overpass outside of the WMA has nesting Cliff Swallow in the summer so be alert when in that area.
