Tompkins Square Park looks like an average city park in New York, with many tall London Plane Trees, high numbers of introduced House Sparrow and Rock Pigeon (domestic), as well as many ornamental flowers. The cherry trees attract many species of warblers in spring, as well as birds that like to eat the buds. Like any small city park, there are birders that regularly bird this area, also known as their "patch". This makes for a large birding community at the location, adding to the guarantee of seeing a continuing rarity at the location.

Tompkins Square Park is near the 2nd Avenue subway stop on the F Line, as well as being close to many bus lines. You can explore the area by foot or bike, since cars are not allowed inside the park. Parking is also scarce in the area surrounding the park.
