Description

Tanamunningen Naturreservat is a large, dynamic river delta at the mouth of the Tana River. With each flood, the Tana River carries large quantities of sediment, which is deposited on sandbanks towards its mouth. The delta area is rich in food and is used by a number of wetland bird species for breeding, overwintering, and as a stopover during spring and autumn migrations. In addition to its general conservation status, the area also has international Ramsar site status, recognizing it as a particularly valuable wetland. It also has the status of an IBA area, an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area.

More than 180 bird species have been recorded: 19 duck species, 5 goose species, 22 wading bird species, 14 gull species, and several other wetland birds. The area is particularly important as a stopover site for the Kvinand. Up to 27,000 individuals have been recorded at one time; these are males that migrate to the Finnmark coast after mating and gather at the Tana estuary before continuing south.
