I was amazed to see that the harbour at low tide is a popular roosting area for autumn migrant flocks of Heilo and Dvergterne. Large numbers of Alkekonge, Dvergmåke, Storjo, Tyvjo, Fjelljo, Havlire, Grålire, Krykkje and Havhest can be seen from the clifftop walk east of town.
Beyond the Seaton Cliffs reserve, 3 miles on foot from Arbroath, is Seaton Den, a wooded valley frequented by migrant passerines. Rarities like Gulbrynsanger, Gulsanger, Dvergfluesnapper and Hauksanger may turn up in autumn.
Cliffs can be steep, take care with children and dogs. There is a tarmac path.
