Description
An extensive area of self-sown scrubland holds good numbers of warblers in summer, mainly Løvsanger and Gransanger, but also Møller and Munk. More mature trees provide habitat for Kattugle. Spettmeis and Halsbåndparakitt have become common in recent years. The Wallsend Burn holds regular Isfugl and Vintererle, and occasional Fossekall in winter. In its lower tidal section Rødstilk is regular, and the semi-tame Stokkands can attract other ducks, including Gravand, Krikkand, and more rarely Stjertand and Mandarinand. There is limited viewing of the River Tyne where the stream runs into the Tyne, but is still worth checking for inland seabirds on the main river; Islom, Lomvi and Alke have all been seen here on occasion, and in summer there is a constant procession of Krykkjes moving to and from their nesting sites further upsteam.
