Description
Westwood Dam and Woodland is a hidden gem for birdwatching in Sheffield. The area has a variety of birds of prey including Musvåk, Vandrefalk, Tårnfalk, Spurvehauk, Kattugle and Kirkeugle. As well as this, the small streams and brooks found within the woodland support Vintererle territories, as well as small numbers of Gråfluesnapper in the summer.
Winter migrants include Rødvingetrost and Gråtrost, as well as the occasional flock of Sidensvans. Summer sightings include migrant Løvsanger, Hagesanger, and Gransanger, as well as breeding Rugde territories. The open water of Westwood Dam and Reservoir can produce some surprises, including Sangsvane in previous years. The woodland supported some of the city's last known pairs of Dvergspett in the early 2000s.
