Description
Witton Lakes are in the Stockland Green area of Birmingham. The two lakes are former drinking water reservoirs. The larger lake is used for boating and the smaller shallower lake is dedicated to wildlife. On the Northern side of the lakes is Witton Lakes Eco Hub, which has a cafe and toilets. The park has open grassland, wooded areas and wildflower meadows, numerous streams lead in and out of the lakes and a community orchard had been planted. The park has a very active friends group.
(*1) (press STAR on map), check large lake in Winter for Brunnakke, Snadderand and good numbers of Dvergdykker. Lower fish numbers mean Toppdykker are only in low numbers, Knoppsvane numbers can be very high for a inner city location and Kvinand and Laksand occasionally turn up.
(*2), the smaller lake can have Krikkand, Skjeand, Sivhøne, Sothøne and Gråhegre though there is a lot of movement of ducks between each lake. A number of different species of Gull (Laridae) have been seen including Fiskemåke and unusually for such an inland site Krykkje.
(*3), the area of trees at the Eastern end of the park has Grønnsisik and Svartmeis, Stjertmeis, Blåmeis and Kjøttmeis are numerous. During Spring/Summer Tornsanger, Løvsanger, Gransanger, Munk, Taksvale, Låvesvale and Tårnseiler can be seen. Makrellterne regularly turn up on passage.
