Going to Pousada Rio Claro, you will want to book boat tours. The banks of Rio Claro are home to countless bird species, with many of them fishing in the river. There are also plenty of other animals, from Caimans and Capybaras to Giant Otters, Tapirs, even the odd Jaguar.
As is the case in all of the Pantanal area, the area is mostly dry for much of the year, while soaked in the rainy season. Trees and shrubs along the river are more lush than in surrounding areas, so there are many species here that cannot be seen at other places in the area.
Among the many bird species found here are the giant Jabiru, Amazon Kingfisher, Scarlet-headed Blackbird, Black-collared Hawk, Agami Heron, Roseate Spoonbill, Wattled Jacana, Nanday Parakeet and Rufous-tailed Jacamar.

Pousada Rio Claro is located 148 km south of Cuiabá, in the Northern Pantanal, which corresponds to the south of the state of Mato Grosso, in the Center-West region of Brazil. Departing from Cuiabá, it is 100 km of asphalt to Poconé and 48 km of dirt road along the Transpantaneira Park Road to the lodge. If you only want to explore the river by boat, you won’t even need a 4x4. The roads aren't difficult to drive but at times very dusty. Hiking is not much of an option here.
