Opis

The Pahala Thalkote Lake and its surrounding marshes and forests are home to approximately 40 water-bird species. Visitors often record over 60 different species during a single excursion. Water birds that are often seen include Painted Stork, Spot-billed Pelican, Purple Heron, Asian Openbill and Pheasant-tailed Jacana. Raptors that can be spotted are Grey-headed Fish-Eagle and the Shahin Falcon, a subspecies of Peregrine Falcon and a powerful resident often found near the high cliffs of the nearby rocks.

Residents birds include White-throated Kingfisher, Little Green Bee-eater, Indian Roller, and the endemic Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill. The nearby sanctuary forest hosts the Indian Pitta (a migratory favorite), Orange-billed Babbler, and the Crested Treeswift.

To observe birds without disturbing them, most birdwatchers opt for a guided boat journey on Thalkote Lake. Tours typically use traditional wooden catamarans or punts, ensuring a silent approach. Booking with a local naturalist is recommended, they can help to find and identify elusive species. Expect to pay between $ 12 and $ 50 per person, depending on whether the tour includes breakfast or snacks.

Pahala Thalkote Lake is situated approximately 6 to 7 kilometers (about a 15–20 minute drive) from the main entrance of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. It is nestled between the Sigiriya Lion Rock and the Pidurangala Monastery Rock, providing a rare vantage point where both can be seen in one frame. Press P on the map for directions.

The most common way to reach the lake from Sigiriya town is by hiring a tuk-tuk, which typically costs between 1,000–1,500 LKR for a round trip. By Car: From Sigiriya, follow the Sigiriya Road for about 6 km towards Thalkote village. Adventurous travelers can take a 6 km jungle and village trail from Sigiriya, which takes roughly 3 hours to walk and offers a glimpse into local rural life.
