Chief habitats in Elan Valley and Gigrin Kites are: streams and open water, frequented by grebes, pluszcz and pliszka górska. The ancient sessile oak woodland is home to pleszka, muchołówka żałobna, świstunka leśna, pełzacz leśny, krogulec and open moorland containing uszatka błotna, drzemlik, kulik wielki, siewka złota, biegus zmienny, Pardwa mszarna, białorzytka, skowronek, kląskawka błotniak zbożowy and kruk.

Kite feeding station south of Rhayader feeds daily each afternoon. It has a hide and parking. Reservoirs are west of Rhayader and have several car parks, wetland birds usually at top ends. For a circular drive to see 4 of the 5 reservoirs, keep turning right to follow Elan valley. Claerwen reservoir is a dead end for cars.
