Opis
Estero Llano Grande State Park contains a small network of resacas (shallow lagoons) and semi-open forest characteristic of the Rio Grande Valley. The park is a top destination for birders visiting the region, and contains many South Texas specialty species found nowhere else in the United States. Several sites around the park are particularly productive for target species.
The visitor center overlooks several small ponds, which often contain many waterbirds such as Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, Fulvous Whistling Duck, Mottled Duck, Sora, Black-necked Stilt, Long-billed Dowitcher, Neotropic Cormorant, White Ibis, White-faced Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill and Tricolored Heron, as well as Green Kingfisher and occasionally Ringed Kingfisher.
To the east, several trails continue through scrubby woodland to additional lakes. These wooded areas are excellent habitat for Common Pauraque, and one or more birds are typically present in the park, often staked out by park rangers. Other woodland specialties that can be found here include Plain Chachalaca, White-tipped Dove, Buff-bellied Hummingbird, Great Kiskadee, Green Jay and Olive Sparrow, among more widespread southern and western semi-desert species.
Estero Llano Grande SP is also famous as a vagrant trap, and records national-level rarities every year from Mexico and Central America. Rare songbirds are most often found in the "tropical area" on the west side of the park, which doubles as a long-term camping area for caravans. Visitors will often place birdfeeders near their trailers, are always made aware that birders and day visitors will walk through the area, and are often quite welcoming - many are themselves birders from other parts of the country! However, as always, good birding ethics and politeness should be observed when birding here. This site is also good habitat for more regular South Texas specialties, and the feeders often attract orioles, jays, and hummingbirds. A nest box in this campground often contains an Eastern Screech-Owl of the southern McCall's subspecies.

Estero Llano Grande State Parkis located in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley, on the southeast end of the city of Weslaco, with the entrance on Lakeview Dr. off of the S. International Blvd (also sometimes called S Farm to Market Rd. 1015). The park is reached by car. There is a $5USD entrance fee, which is paid at the visitors center, located near the parking lot. Press P on the map for directions to the parking lot.

Alligators are common at this park, and while no unprovoked fatal alligator attacks have been recorded in Texas in nearly 200 years, these large animals should always be given caution and respect. See the link to Texas Parks & Wildlife's Alligator Safety page for more details.
As with other sites in this region, heat and exposure should be considered when visiting, particularly in summer.
