Jerup Strand comprises a flat sandy beach with a single line of dunes, marshland and grazed meadows. It is situated on the shore of the Kattegat north of Frederikshavn. Several species of wader breed in the area, including Ostraceiro, Borrelho-grande-de-coleira, Perna-vermelha-comum and now and again Alfaiate.
Jerup is a stopover site for several duck species, including Piadeira and Marrequinha-comum. During migrating season other birds arrive, including Merganso-de-poupa, Pato-branco, Tarambola-dourada, Tarambola-cinzenta, Pilrito-comum, Abibe-comum, Seixoeira, Maçarico-real and Pilrito-pequeno. Now and again, flocks of Ganso-de-faces-negras and Ganso-de-faces-brancas and a few Ganso-de-bico-curto stage on the meadows. Ganso-comum can be seen throughout the year.
In winter there are flocks of Pilrito-sanderlingo running along the sea’s edge, and one can be lucky enough to spot a Coruja-do-nabal over the meadows. Búteo-calçado and Tartaranhão-azulado can also be seen flying over the meadows, together with flocks of Pintarroxo-de-bico-amarelo and Escrevedeira-das-neves. Small flocks of Cotovia-cornuda and a few Escrevedeira da Lapónia appear now and then. falcão-peregrino is a regular visitor.

Follow route 40 connecting Frederikshavn with Skagen. About 13km north of Frederikshavn one reaches the village of Jerup. Just north of the village, turn east along Fredborgvej (there is a sign to Jerup Strand). At the beach is a car park, from where one can get onto the beach. Most birds can usually be seen at the southern end of the area. Note: the area is privately owned but it is possible to park and walk along the beach. Click on the P in the map to get directions.
