The area is of great importance for breeding birds of semi-natural grasslands and wetlands. Around 80 species of breeding birds are recorded annually, including Maçarico-real, Abibe-comum, Cegonha-branca , Mergulhão-pequeno, Frango-d'água, Codorniz, Marreco, Marrequinha-comum, Pato-trombeteiro, Frisada, Ógea, Cuco-canoro, Pisco-de-peito-azul, Cartaxo-comum, rouxinol-dos-caniços (rarely Felosa-dos-juncos and Rouxinol-grande-dos-caniços) and Picanço-de-dorso-ruivo. Large flocks of Ganso-grande-de-testa-branca use the area during winter, and also a small group of Ganso-pequeno-de-testa-branca from a rewilding project in Sweden has established a "tradition" to visit the area for wintering, starting in 2017. In late winter, the area serves as roosting place for hundreds of Grou-comum and during spring migration, a great variety of ducks and waders can be encountered. Occasionally, rarities show up (e.g. Garça-roxa, Zarro-castanho, Franga-d'água-bastarda).
