During the winter months, many migratory duck and geese species rest at Altwarmbüchener See, such as Ganso-comum, Ganso do Canadá, Ganso do Egipto, Pato-real, Zarro-negrinha, Marrequinha-comum, Frisada, Piadeira, Pato-olho-d'ouro, Zarro-comum, Merganso-grande and Tundra Bean Goose. Also Cisne-vulgar, Corvo-marinho-de-faces-brancas, Mergulhão-de-crista, Garça-branca-grande and Garça-real can be seen regularly. The park around the lake is home to alvéola-branca, chapim-montês, Chapim-palustre, Felosa-comum, Dom-fafe, melro and many more.
During the summer months there is a lot of bathing activity and observation opportunities are limited.

Altwarmbüchener See is located northeast of the city of Hannover. The lake is easily accessible by public transport (tram line 3). The tram stops (1) are 500–900 m from the lake. There are also numerous parking spaces available. Press a P on the map for directions to a parking lot. A circular path (3,5 km) leads around the lake. In summer, there is a kiosk, boat rentals, and public restrooms.
