Descrição
The Solarberg Fürth, a former landfill now covered and repurposed, is a prominent hill in the western part of Fürth. Its open, elevated landscape is mostly grass-covered and partially lined with shrubs and trees. A large solar power installation covers much of the summit, but the surrounding slopes and edges provide habitat for various bird species.
Birdwatching here focuses on species typical of open and transitional habitats. Common sightings include Laverca, Cartaxo-comum, and Pintarroxo-comum, particularly in the breeding season. peneireiro-de-dorso-malhado / peneireiro often hunt over the grasslands, and Águia-d'asa-redonda are frequently seen soaring overhead. The area is also used by migrating birds as a resting or stopover site, especially during spring and autumn.
And keep an eye out for Perdiz-cinzenta. They like to sit under the solar panels because they are relatively protected from birds of prey and falcons there.
While the site is not a birding hotspot, it offers a wide view of the surrounding landscape and a chance to observe birds in an unusual, post-industrial setting with minimal disturbance.
Occasionally, the Solarberg attracts less common species, particularly during migration. These may include Cartaxo-nortenho, Chasco-cinzento, and Petinha-dos-prados. In some years, Picanço-de-dorso-ruivo or even Coruja-do-nabal have been reported. The open terrain and lack of tree cover make it easier to spot ground-feeding or low-flying birds, especially in early morning or late afternoon hours.

The Solarberg Fürth is a notable example of landscape transformation. Originally a landfill site, it was sealed and converted into a solar energy facility and green space. The hill offers panoramic views of Fürth, Nuremberg, and the surrounding countryside. Informal paths allow visitors to walk, jog, or observe nature. Despite its artificial origin, the site has developed ecological value, particularly for insects and birds that favor open, lightly managed habitats.
The combination of renewable energy use and biodiversity makes the Solarberg an interesting example of how post-industrial sites can be repurposed for both ecological and recreational benefit.
