Lower Hartshay and the Cromford Canal support a wide range of birds throughout the year. Gavião da Europa are often seen hunting over the village and surrounding fields, while Águia-d'asa-redonda soar overhead and the occasional Milhafre-real drifts through. Garça-real regularly feed along the reedbeds and canal edges, with Alvéola-cinzenta picking insects from the water margins. Chapim-rabilongo move through the trees in busy family parties, and Rouxinol-bravo are frequently heard calling from dense reedbeds.
Autumn and winter bring an increase in wildfowl and passage birds, with Ganso do Canadá , Ganso-comum , Pato-real , Marrequinha-comum and Piadeira using the canal and nearby waters. Abibe-comum , Narceja-comum and Frango-d'água may appear in wetter areas, while Guincho-comum , Gaivota-argêntea and gaivota-da-asa-escura gather on open water and fields. Thrushes are a highlight at this time of year, with Tordo-ruivo-comum and Tordo-zornal arriving from the continent alongside resident Tordo-comum and Tordeia. Mixed tit flocks, Estrelinha-de-poupa , Pintassilgo , Lugre and Pintarroxo-de-queixo-preto are regular, and corvids including Gralha-de-nuca-cinzenta , Gralha-calva , Pega-rabuda and Gaio-comum are ever-present.
Spring and summer see the area come alive with breeding birds and migrants. Andorinhão-preto , Andorinha-das-chaminés and Andorinho-dos-beirais feed low over the canal and reedbeds, often joined by hunting Ógea in warm weather. Reedbeds hold rouxinol-dos-caniços , Felosa-dos-juncos and Rouxinol-bravo , while papa-amoras-cinzento and Felosa-comum sing from scrub and hedgerows. Alvéola-cinzenta , Galinha-d'água , Galeirão-comum , Chapim-azul and chapim-real regularly breed along the canal, and Laverca can be heard over nearby fields. Occasional highlights include pintarroxo-pequeno Felosa-malhada , Maçarico-real and peneireiro-de-dorso-malhado / peneireiro.
Overall, this short walk offers excellent habitat diversity and rewarding birding in all seasons, with something new to see throughout the year.

Cromford Canal and Lower Hartshay are located just west of Ripley. There’s no official parking, but on-road parking is possible. Please be mindful of local houses and park considerately. Press P on the map for directions.
