Chief habitats in Elan Valley and Gigrin Kites are: streams and open water, frequented by grebes, Melro-d'água and Alvéola-cinzenta. The ancient sessile oak woodland is home to Rabirruivo-de-testa-branca, Papa-moscas-preto, Felosa-assobiadeira, Trepadeira-do-bosque, Gavião da Europa and open moorland containing Coruja-do-nabal, Esmerilhão, Maçarico-real, Tarambola-dourada, Pilrito-comum, Lagópode-cinzento, Chasco-cinzento, Laverca, Cartaxo-comum Tartaranhão-azulado and Corvo.

Kite feeding station south of Rhayader feeds daily each afternoon. It has a hide and parking. Reservoirs are west of Rhayader and have several car parks, wetland birds usually at top ends. For a circular drive to see 4 of the 5 reservoirs, keep turning right to follow Elan valley. Claerwen reservoir is a dead end for cars.
