In Glen Tanar 106 bird species have been seen, passerines and raptors prominent. Águia-real, Tartaranhão-azulado, Gavião da Europa, Milhafre-real, Águia-d'asa-redonda, falcão-peregrino, Coruja-do-nabal, Estrelinha-de-poupa, Cruza-bico-comum, Lugre, Papa-moscas-preto. Wildcats possible, also Red Deer, Otter, and Pine Marten. Lagópode-cinzento and Galo-lira occur on higher ground, but although formerly a stronghold for Tetraz, these have unfortunately now died out.

Glen Tanar is 6 km (4 miles) SW of Aboyne, which is on the A9 road east of Ballater. The nearest bus service is in Aboyne (6 km). Click on the P in the map to get directions to parking and visitor centre. The circular walk indicated on the map is about 8,5 km.
