There is layby parking on the Newport iron bridge which is a good viewpoint. Look for waders, gulls and terns in autumn/winter - Tarambola-dourada, Andorinha-do-mar-anã, Tarambola-cinzenta, Narceja-galega, Narceja-comum, Maçarico-real, Combatente, Abibe-comum, Pilrito-comum, Pilrito-sanderlingo. Ganso-patola, shearwaters and Papagaio-do-mar may be seen from the beach, or the cliffs further north, which may also have peneireiro-de-dorso-malhado / peneireiro, Gralha-de-bico-vermelho and Cartaxo-comum. Felosa-dos-juncos, rouxinol-dos-caniços, Escrevedeira-dos-caniços, breed in the reeds where Garça-branca-pequena, Frango-d'água and Guarda-rios-comum may also feed.

The estuary and adjoining town of Newport, Pembs (not the same as the city of Newport, Gwent in east Wales) are midway between Fishguard and Cardigan, 10 miles from each, on the A487 coast road. Buses every 2 hours. Nearest trains at Fishguard. The south shore walk is 3 km there and back, the north shore and clifftop walk is 4 km.
