The Oa Peninsula features a rocky coastline where Gralha-de-bico-vermelho breed and are protected. More than 110 other species have been seen here. Águia-real and Tartaranhão-azulado are frequent. Ganso-grande-de-testa-branca and Ganso-de-faces-brancas (20,000 or more) graze the farm fields in winter. Up to 14 species of duck may be seen here, either offshore or in the freshwater lochs. Smaller birds include Pintarroxo-de-bico-amarelo, Laverca and occasional Codornizão, mostly on migration.
Mammals to see here include otter, red squirrel, red deer, dolphins, porpoises and seals. Harmless, plankton-eating basking sharks are a possibility in summer.

Islay is reached by CalMac ferry from Kinnacraig. Recent reports indicate the ferry fleet to be aging and unreliable. Delays are possible. The Oa is 6 miles west of Port Ellen by car or bicycle. The nearest bus stop is in Port Ellen.
