The cliffs themselves and the surrounding chalk grasslands make a unique habitat found in few other places, while the proximity to the continent makes it a popular resting spot for rarities from across the channel. Nesting birds can include falcão-peregrino, Corvo, Fulmar-glacial and even Gaivota-tridáctila. Divers and auks can be seen off the coast in winter, and it is not unusual for rarities to appear: Torcicolo, Estrelinha de Pallas, Melro-de-peito-branco and the occasional shrike.
