Whitwell Creek is a sheltered inlet on the northern shore of Rutland Water. The area features open water, shallow margins, grassy banks and nearby woodland, creating a range of habitats that support a variety of waterfowl, waders and passerines. The calm, protected waters make it a reliable location for birds that prefer less exposed areas.
During the winter months, the creek regularly hosts dabbling ducks such as Frisada, Marrequinha-comum, Pato-trombeteiro and Piadeira. Grebes, like Mergulhão-de-crista and Mergulhão-pequeno, are often present, and occasional divers use the inlet when the main reservoir is exposed. Migration periods bring additional interest, with waders stopping to feed along the shallows and the site producing occasional scarce or rare visitors, including Socó-taquari, rare grebes and Pilrito de Baird.
Whitwell Creek also supports herons and egrets, with Garça-real and Garça-branca-pequena frequently seen hunting along the margins or flying low over the water. The creek’s shallow edges and reed-lined sections make it suitable for rails, including Galinha-d'água and Frango-d'água. The area is a particular haven for Galeirão-comum, which gather in good numbers, especially in calmer, sheltered sections of the inlet.
In the warmer months, Whitwell Creek can attract the occasional Pato-ferrugíneo, making it one of the more reliable places in Rutland Water to see this species. A pair of Papa-moscas-cinzento also nest in the eaves of the Rutland Watersports Centre, providing a breeding highlight for summer visitors. Other summer birds include common waterfowl, gulls and small passerines around the margins.
The site is easy to access, with parking nearby and good views across the creek. It is quieter than many other parts of Rutland Water, making it practical for long observation sessions. The combination of sheltered water, varied habitats, and the potential for rare or unusual species makes Whitwell Creek a worthwhile destination for birders year-round.

Whitwell Creek is located on the northern shore of Rutland Water, near the village of Whitwell, Rutland (postcode LE15 8BL). It is signposted off the A606 between Oakham and Uppingham. There is a small car park adjacent to the creek, making it convenient for visitors arriving by car. Press P on the map for directions to the carpark. Public transport options are limited; the nearest bus stops are in Oakham, about 4–5 km away, so a car, bicycle or taxi is the most practical way to reach the site.
The creek is best explored on foot. Paths along the edge of the water allow good views of the shallow margins, grassy banks and sheltered inlets. Binoculars and scopes can be used from the paths for extended observation. Cycling is possible on some of the wider paths around Rutland Water, but most detailed birdwatching at Whitwell Creek requires walking along the shore.
A typical visit can take anywhere between 30 minutes and 1 hour.
