Descrição
Witton Lakes are in the Stockland Green area of Birmingham. The two lakes are former drinking water reservoirs. The larger lake is used for boating and the smaller shallower lake is dedicated to wildlife. On the Northern side of the lakes is Witton Lakes Eco Hub, which has a cafe and toilets. The park has open grassland, wooded areas and wildflower meadows, numerous streams lead in and out of the lakes and a community orchard had been planted. The park has a very active friends group.
(*1) (press STAR on map), check large lake in Winter for Piadeira, Frisada and good numbers of Mergulhão-pequeno. Lower fish numbers mean Mergulhão-de-crista are only in low numbers, Cisne-vulgar numbers can be very high for a inner city location and Pato-olho-d'ouro and Merganso-grande occasionally turn up.
(*2), the smaller lake can have Marrequinha-comum, Pato-trombeteiro, Galinha-d'água, Galeirão-comum and Garça-real though there is a lot of movement of ducks between each lake. A number of different species of Gull (Laridae) have been seen including Gaivota-parda and unusually for such an inland site Gaivota-tridáctila.
(*3), the area of trees at the Eastern end of the park has Lugre and Chapim-preto, Chapim-rabilongo, Chapim-azul and chapim-real are numerous. During Spring/Summer Papa-amoras-comum, Felosa-musical, Felosa-comum, Toutinegra-de-barrette-preto, Andorinho-dos-beirais, Andorinha-das-chaminés and Andorinhão-preto can be seen.
