Description

Phnom Krom is a temple hill and a surrounding village located close to Siem Reap, Cambodia’s second largest city and the place to stay when visiting Angkor Wat. Around the village, which lies just to the north of Tonle Sap, the country’s largest lake, are rice fields and wetlands that attract a wide variety of birds.

More than 270 bird species, including many migrants, have been reported in the area. Among them are Cotton Pygmy-Goose, Green-billed Malkoha, White-throated Kingfisher, Taiga Flycatcher, Oriental Pratincole, Bronze-winged Jacana, Asian Openbill, Asian Koel, Large Hawk-Cuckoo and Amur Stonechat.

Access

Getting to Phnom Krom couldn’t be any easier. While a few professional bird guides offer organized tours on the internet, they will get you there the same way you can use on your own: simply take a tuktuk, one of the inexpensive local three-wheeled motor taxis, to get to the Phnom Krom area, located less than 11 km south of Siem Reap.

The best birding areas are just north of the village, on the west side of the road from Siem Reap (see map), where you can wander on your own, observing or taking pictures of birds at your leisure. Owing to the proximity to the city, renting a bicycle is another good option to get here. Phnom Krom’s paths and trails can be a little muddy, so bring solid footwear that won’t mind getting dirty.
