Description

Pollardstown Fen is recognised as an internationally important fen ecosystem and many birds breed here. A walk along the boardwalk on an early spring morning is awash with singing birds. Rață mică, Corcodel mic, Cârstel de baltă, Becațină comună, Grelușel pătat, Lăcar mic and Presură de stuf all breed on the fen. In the surrounding woodlands, Silvie cu cap negru, Pitulice mică, Pitulice fluierătoare and Muscar sur all breed and Porumbel de scorbură have been recorded in the surrounding farmland.

The fen is also the best place in Kildare to see Erete de stuf, with the species recorded sporadically in the last number of years. The area is under-birded and there is potential for many more interesting discoveries.
