Description

The large village of Gunnislake is in the Tamar Valley an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Gunnislake New Bridge spanning the river, like most things called new is really quite old built in the 1500's and was the site of a battle in the English Civil War. The walk (3,5 km, circular) starts beside the bridge on the Cornish side, following the river downstream through spectacular woodland. Passing a short section of the Tamar Manure Navigation Canal, manure in this case means any material used as a farmland fertilizer, usually lime and sea sand. It was originally planned to be a 20 mile long route using the river and canal system, but only this short section was completed. It was in use for 120 years and outlasted every other canal in the Westcountry. The path continues to follow the river and then turns inland onto a narrow lane back to the village car park (Fee Payable-but first 2 hours free). Depending on season some birds you can expect are Huhurez mic, Aușel cu cap galben, Mugurar, Șorecar comun and Codobatură de munte, occasionally a few Botgros put in an appearance.
