Description
The reservoir is shallow, having only a maximum depth of 9m (30’), which makes it very attractive to both dabbling and diving ducks. It occasionally attracts less common wildfowl, such as Большой крохаль and Синьга and Серощекая поганка, Черношейная поганка and Красношейная поганка. Waders are often present in spring and autumn, including Турухтан, Черныш, Бекас, Травник, Кулик-сорока and Малый зуёк. Scaling Dam can also be an excellent place to watch raptors and, from the hide, an eye should always be kept on the moorland plateau and valleys for Полевой лунь, Болотный лунь, Дербник and Сапсан and, if you are extremely lucky, Красный коршун or Зимняк. The site is also good for summer visitors, such as Обыкновенная кукушка, Луговой чекан and Пеночка-весничка, and residents like Черноголовый чекан, Горная трясогузка and Полевой воробей.
There is a hide for birdwatching where you might see Чибис, Серый гусь, Канадская казарка, Лебедь-кликун and many wading birds.
