Description
There are two lakes in the area, separated by a strip of land. The banks of the northern pond consist of gravel and sand, whilst the southern pond is surrounded by trees and has only very narrow or no large banks; however, there are a few areas of reeds. To the west of the ponds, renaturation work is still actively underway. In addition to the ponds, the area also features meadows, hedgerows, fields and a small wooded area.
Whilst around the southern pond one can mainly hear and see songbirds such as the kolibiarik čipčavý, sýkorka belasá, sýkorka veľká, trsteniarik veľký, trsteniarik obyčajný, penica čiernohlavá, penica popolavá, penica obyčajná and vrchárka modrá, the pond itself is often home to potápka malá, potápka chochlatá, kačica divá and hus divá. At the northern pond, you can mainly spot chochlačka vrkočatá, lyska čierna, kačička mandarínska and labuť veľká. On the patch of meadow between the ponds, you will frequently find pŕhľaviar čiernohlavý, strnádka trstinová and svrčiak zelenkavý. In the hedge by the road to the east of the ponds, you can find strakoš obyčajný, strnádka obyčajná and ďateľ veľký.

Access
Kiesgrube Zschieren is located north of the town of Heidenau. You can reach the area by car from Heidenau or Dresden and park along Zschierener Elbstraße. It is also possible to get there by public transport. From Heidenau railway station (1), it is a walk of approx. 1.5 km. From the Heidenau Rathaus bus stop (2), it is then a walk of approx. 800 m to the area. From the Dresden Tronitzer Straße bus stop (3), it is approx. 700 m to the area.

The area is mainly used by local residents as a recreational spot at weekends and on warmer evenings. Although swimming is officially prohibited, both lakes are used for this purpose on warm days.
