Lower Hartshay and the Cromford Canal support a wide range of birds throughout the year. jastrab krahulec are often seen hunting over the village and surrounding fields, while myšiak hôrny soar overhead and the occasional haja červená drifts through. volavka popolavá regularly feed along the reedbeds and canal edges, with trasochvost horský picking insects from the water margins. mlynárka dlhochvostá move through the trees in busy family parties, and cetia západná are frequently heard calling from dense reedbeds.
Autumn and winter bring an increase in wildfowl and passage birds, with bernikľa veľká , hus divá , kačica divá , kačica chrapka and kačica hvizdárka using the canal and nearby waters. cibík chochlatý , močiarnica mekotavá and chriašteľ vodný may appear in wetter areas, while čajka smejivá , čajka striebristá and čajka tmavá gather on open water and fields. Thrushes are a highlight at this time of year, with drozd červenkavý and drozd čvíkota arriving from the continent alongside resident drozd plavý and drozd trskota. Mixed tit flocks, králik zlatohlavý , stehlík obyčajný , stehlík čížik and stehlík čečetka are regular, and corvids including kavka tmavá , havran čierny , straka čiernozobá and sojka obyčajná are ever-present.
Spring and summer see the area come alive with breeding birds and migrants. dážďovník obyčajný , lastovička obyčajná and belorítka obyčajná feed low over the canal and reedbeds, often joined by hunting sokol lastovičiar in warm weather. Reedbeds hold trsteniarik bahenný , trsteniarik malý and cetia západná , while penica popolavá and kolibiarik čipčavý sing from scrub and hedgerows. trasochvost horský , sliepočka vodná , lyska čierna , sýkorka belasá and sýkorka veľká regularly breed along the canal, and škovránok poľný can be heard over nearby fields. Occasional highlights include stehlík hnedkavý svrčiak zelenkavý , hvizdák veľký and sokol myšiar (pustovka).
Overall, this short walk offers excellent habitat diversity and rewarding birding in all seasons, with something new to see throughout the year.

Access
Cromford Canal and Lower Hartshay are located just west of Ripley. There’s no official parking, but on-road parking is possible. Please be mindful of local houses and park considerately. Press P on the map for directions.
