Description
Pench National Park is a wildlife reserve located in central India, spanning the states of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra and covering an area of approximately 292 square kilometers. The National Park gets its name from the Pench River that flows through the park, nurturing its diverse ecosystems. The park is known for its rich biodiversity, hosting tigers, leopards, wild dogs, sloth bears, sambar deer, and chital. The park’s diverse landscape of teak forests, open grasslands, and the Pench River creates a rich habitat for a variety of avian life, including rare vultures and vibrant forest dwellers.
Top Birding Spots:
Pench River Banks & Sitaghat (1): The rocky banks and flowing water attract a high density of aquatic birds such as Little Ringed Plover, Oriental Darters, Indian Spot-billed Ducks, and the rare River Lapwing.
Bodhanala Lake (2): A hotspot for forest birds and raptors due to its dense foliage and reliable water source.
Alikatta Grasslands (3): Renowned for sightings of vultures and large numbers of waterfowl and wading birds.
Runijhuni Nature Trail (4): A 3 km walking trail near Karmajhiri Gate where birders can spot smaller species like Warblers and Prinias.
Kohka Lake (5): Located just outside the park, this is an excellent spot for watching Osprey and Grey-headed Fish-Eagle.

Pench National Park is well-connected by air, rail, and road, with Nagpur serving as the most convenient gateway for travelers. Nagpur International Airport is the closest and most convenient airport, located approximately 130 km away. It has excellent flight connectivity to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. A taxi from the airport takes about 2–3 hours to reach the park. Jabalpur Airport is an alternative domestic option, about 215 km from the park, requiring a 4–5 hour drive.
By Rail: Nagpur Junction (NGP): The primary railhead, roughly 130 km from the park. It is a major hub connected to almost all parts of India. Seoni Railway Station is the nearest rail station at just 72 km away, though it has more limited train connections compared to Nagpur. Jabalpur Railway Station: Located about 205 km away, serving as a secondary option for those coming from the north.
By Road: National Highway 44 (NH-44): The park is conveniently located on the Nagpur-Jabalpur Highway. Hourly buses run from Nagpur to Khawasa, the nearest town to the popular Turia gate. From Khawasa (12 km from the park), local taxis or resort pick-ups are available. Drive Times: From Nagpur: ~2–3 hours. From Jabalpur: ~4–5 hours.

January to late April is widely considered the peak for birdwatching. The winter months (November to February) are best for seeing migratory waterfowl, while late spring (March to May) is ideal for observing nesting resident species.
