Description

The Maasvlakte is a large industrial area that has been constructed at the mouth of the Maas. The Maasvlakte is located directly on the North Sea and is part of the Port of Rotterdam. Birdwatching is surprisingly nice on the Maasvlakte. During both spring and autumn migration, the Maasvlakte is always good for vagrants and other surprises. You can see many seabirds and sometimes a 'fall' of migratory birds occurs. These are birds that are so exhausted from their journey across the sea that they flop down at your feet. Birds that can be spotted include žličarka, veliki škurh, rdečenogi martinec, školjkarica, peščenec, kreheljc, žvižgavka, duplinska kozarka, črna prosenka and kričava cigra. But also more rare birds like strmoglavec, polarni slapnik, and bodičasta govnačka can show up, especially during migration.

The North Sea Boulevard is situated on a high, man-made sand embankment. Much of this embankment is covered in dune scrub. Interesting birds can appear in the thickets during migration, and in spring, many breeding birds can be seen and heard. From the embankment, you have a view of the mudflats and sandbanks below, where thousands of birds often rest and forage. Because of the elevated position, the birds can sometimes be quite far away, so a spotting scope is essential. You are not allowed to enter a large part of the area immediately surrounding the sandbanks and mudflats, but you may walk through the dune scrub where several pleasant paths run (see the map). Also the beach of Slufterstrand (1) at the western corner is accessible.
