Description
Small island in the River Ore famous for its sabljarka and žličarka. In autumn and winter, the island provides a haven for large numbers of ducks and wading birds. Atmospheric and remote. Pegasta sova nest in the derelict military buildings. You can also encounter rjavi lunj. Also hares, chinese water deer and migrant waders. There are 8 hides on Havergate, the first breeding site in the RSPB sabljarka recovery programme. Note: Access via boat on pre-booked trips only.

From Ipswich take A12 northward, turning east beyond Woodbridge onto minor roads to Butley and Orford. Click on the P in the map to get directions. Access via boat on pre-booked trips only. Boats leave Orford Quay at 10 am on the first Saturday of every month (maximum 12 people) except May, June and July. Entrance charge £ 19 (RSPB members), £ 24 (non-members).
