Description
The reservoir is shallow, having only a maximum depth of 9m (30’), which makes it very attractive to both dabbling and diving ducks. It occasionally attracts less common wildfowl, such as veliki žagar and crna raca and rjavovrati ponirek, črnovrati ponirek and zlatouhi ponirek. Waders are often present in spring and autumn, including togotnik, pikasti martinec, kozica, rdečenogi martinec, školjkarica and mali deževnik. Scaling Dam can also be an excellent place to watch raptors and, from the hide, an eye should always be kept on the moorland plateau and valleys for pepelasti lunj, rjavi lunj, mali sokol and sokol selec and, if you are extremely lucky, rjavi škarnik or koconoga kanja. The site is also good for summer visitors, such as kukavica, repaljščica and severni kovaček, and residents like prosnik, siva pastirica and poljski vrabec.
There is a hide for birdwatching where you might see priba, siva gos, kanadska gos, labod pevec and many wading birds.
