Charcas de Erjos

Tenerife  >  Spain

Beautiful path from the village of Erjos to the Erjos ponds. Note that the ponds are dry for years already, so don't expect to see much water.

Description

The Charcas de Erjos or Erjos Ponds are located just south of the village of Erjos. The ponds dry up regularly and and there has been no water in the ponds at all for the past few years. So the amount of birds you can see fluctuates as much as the water level. But it still is a nice walk from the village of Erjos even if there is no water in the ponds. Among the birds you can observe in the area are Gavran, Mišar, Kobac, Divlji kanarinac, Kanarski zviždak, Afrička plava senica, Afrička kamenjarka, Grlica, Sredozemna crnoglava grmuša and Kanarska čiopa. If you are lucky you can see Kanarski golub or Lovorov golub flying over or foraging in the fields.

If there is water in the ponds again hopefully in the future, you also have a chance to see Barska kokica, Liska, Siva čaplja and sometimes Barska šljuka and if there is plenty of water even ducks can be observed.

Access

The Charcas de Erjos are located just south of the village of Erjos and the area is easy to reach on foot from the village of Erjos. Parking is possible on the big central parking in Erjos. Click on the P in the map to get directions. Cross the road from the parking lot, go down the stairs at the church and follow the path. On the map we have indicated the walking route (2 km one way). Good idea to combine a visit to the ponds with a walk to the Erjos Laurel Forest of Monte del Agua (which starts from the same parking and is described as a separate entry on Birdingplaces), this is the best place on Tenerife to see Kanarski golub and Lovorov golub.
