Description
Landschaftspark Wiese is rather spacious and encompasses a few different types of landscape. Most of it is either forests or open fields and grass patches, with a few farmhouses and fruit orchards providing additional habitats. Most importantly, the small river Wiese cuts through the area and, along with artificial canals and a pond, attracts water birds and wagtails. Along the banks Bela pliska and Potočna pliska can be seen, starting in spring. Veliki ronac and Utva zlatokrila can be seen often and there are usually several types of ducks on the pond. Also, Siva čaplja and Veliki vranac are around plenty.
In the woods, Carić, Zeba, Sojka and similar birds occur. Around the farmhouses, Gradska lasta and Seoska lasta appear, as well as Čvorak (in spring) and Rusi svračak. Birds of prey such as Crna lunja circle over the open fields. Overall, a very versatile little birding spot. The area is very easily accessible and inviting for some after-work birding in the evening or to just spend some two hours when you're around Basel. Also, combining it with a trip to the closeby Riehen Schlipf, where you'll have plenty of birds of prey and a chance to hike up into the vinyards, makes for a nice day trip.

Access
Landschaftspark Wiese extends quite a bit along the river Wiese, so there are multiple points of entry. By car, the parking spot on the German side of the border at 'Gebrauchshundesportverein Weil am Rhein' is the best free option. Alternatively, you can also drive through Riehen to the Northwestern side of the park and leave the car at 'Naturbad Riehen'. There are roads for bikes in the park as well, so you can just cycle right in from Basel, Riehen or Weil. Some paths are only to be used on foot but everything is easily accessible, flat, and mostly dry. The circular route indicated on the map is about 5 km.
